It's time to replace my old 9800 pro, it's served me well but I need to replace it now for various reasons. I've got a budget of about £150 max but would be happier if I could get something with good "bang for buck" around £100-£120.

What can people recommend? Would something like a 6600GT be a reasonable replacement? Would I see much of a difference (even though I don't really play games on my computer)?

Any help and suggestions are very much appreciated, I want to go to the OcUK shop this weekend and pick something up you see :)

*edit* it needs to be an AGP card and I want to get an Nvidia card if I can because they have better Linux drivers.

A 6600gt is better than your 9800pro but not hugely although does have better Linux support, a 6800gs such as the one on This Week Only will give much more of a jump but comes in at around £150.

If you aren't much of a gamer then a 6600gt is probably your best bet at ~£100.

I upgraded my Hercules 9800pro just last week, to the BFG 6800GS from OcUK's Deal of Week offer.
For the 140 quid I paid, it is a pretty sweet deal for the performance gain - after unlocking, my 3DMark03 score more than doubled!

TBH, if you are not much of a gamer I would say that you should keep it and save your money as the 9800pro is still a very good card. What is the spec of your pc btw?

I bought a XFX 6800 GS XXX because my 9800 pro is acting up I get lines and squares and all strang stuff when ever I try and run a game I've never clocked it and I've also put a better heatsink and fan on the GPU and it still does it so I'm guessing its the memory on the card as gone down to pooper.

How much better is this card I'm an mmorpg gamer but play the odd FPS? It seemed a good deal at £146 and should make due until directX 10 comes out no point paying £400 for a DirectX 9 card when I bet DirectX 10 games are on their way I thought.

good lord.... i dont know how many times im going to have to post this... DX10 games are not on their way, there isnt even a stable developement kit available yet for DX 10. DX 10 is being released with Vista for which the earliest date is december 2006. DX 10 development tools will be released 2 to 3 months before that so your looking at october at the earliest, then factor in 12 to 18 months to build the blooming thing and your looking at way into 2007 before DX 10 becomes mainstream. by which time youl want a new card anyway.

But what does he/she use PC for, video editing, movies....

Movies will look the same whatever the graphics card is, if somone wanted to upgrade a video editing spec theyd want a new cpu not a graphics card.

I want to upgrade it primarily for the better drivers on Nvidia cards in Linux. I don't want to spend a load of cash though because I want to do a full upgrade later on in the summer after the new AM2 socket boards are out so I'll need to be looking at a PCI Express card then too as I won't be able to carry an AGP card over to the AM2 (I doubt it very much anyway).

My current spec is:

MSI Neo Platinum motherboard
A64 3200 (S754)
9800 (BIOS flashed to 9800 pro)
1 GB Corsair PC3700
1x160gb hdd 1x80gb hdd (both IDE)

So I want something to tide me over in Linux in the meantime but don't want to splash loads of cash on an AGP card as I won't be able to put it in my next motherboard you see :)

I'm thinking a 6600GT should give me a slight increase in performance graphics wise. The only game I ever really play on my PC is Star Wars Galaxies but I'm not playing that at the moment anyway because the state of the game is currently shoddy to say the least.

Any other suggestions for a new card other that a 6800 GS? Or should I just go for a 6600GT based on what I have said already?

Thanks to all who have answered already :)

If you're going for a GT, get the cheapest one you can find, like the Leadtek on this week only for £93.94. Getting a 256mb one gives no advantage over the 128mb in my experience.

I still dont understand why you want to upgrade when you dont play games, you wouldnt notice a difference in peformance from better drivers. Id advise you to save your money.
