I was told this card was silent, but its not... grrr

Im looking for a silent cooler to fit it, but im wary of getting a zalman, as I dont think it'll fit as the gpu is too low on the board, any ideas??

You cmight be able to fit one of the Zalman passive heatsinks used for chipsets on there. It looks about the right size.
Obviously you'd want to make sure there's some airflow in that area with a passive cooler.

The Zalman VF700 & VF900 are offset to allow for this. The VF700 fits at an angle and I'd be surprised if it doesn't fit. OTOH the Zalmans are probably overkill for that card, judging by the original, and I found a Startech cooler that works well on my X1300 card. Unfortunately I can't tell you more as it came from a competitor.

Well i pulled a passive heatsink of an old AGP GF4 I had, I hacked a few bits of it, where the caps where but it fits ok.

I just did a round of 3dmark05 and it reached 93'C - This to me seems right toasty, but the threshold says 130'C, and I didnt crash or get any corruptions.

I have now ordered a VF700 anyway, so hopefully it'll fit. (this thing was meant to be cheap... its getting more expensive by the min... )

Having just looked again, its idling at 88'C

You could make an innovative mod to your PC. Mimic the Caffeine Machine for coffee and use your graphics card for toasting. Coffee and toast at your keyboard - perfect!

No idea. I changed because the standard one was too noisy. The Startech is permanently on 5V and doesn't get very warm at all and certainly very little noise. But I'm not gaming on it; it was in my test PC and mainly used to run Virtual PC.

Is this is suitable card for a HTPC? (if you can get a passive version) is the HD acceleration broken? Does it let off much heat? Will there by any difference in video playback between a 6150 IGP?

Its a good card for purevideo, and you can get passive ones (but when i ordered, there was no stock)

Purevideo relies a lot on core speed more than pixel shader power like games, the 7300GS has a pretty high clock speed for a budget gpu, so it works much better than say NV 6200's etc. This card also has component out, so i can use that for HDTV incase I need the DVI on the tv for something else in the future.

It has a couple of extra functions compared with a 6150, see here but the 6150 is fine for SD content, but it might not be so good with HD stuff, you'd get lower cpu usage with a 7300GS.

note: It was only the 6800 on AGP that hardware Acceleration was broke on. (oh and 6100 onboard doesnt have much)

I don't use purevideo, I use have ffdshow instead. So in that case a faster videocard won't make a difference? Purevideo only scales mpeg-ii material? My htpc is no longer for DVD playback, I have a Oppo 981. So the htpc is only for avi's (xvid/divx/other) The 6150 looks like it supports HD acceleration. You don't happen to have a Athlon 3700 by any chance? If you do then can compare what a certain HD AVI movie takes up on CPU usage during playback.
