I have an extremely annoying issue. I've asked on here before but I've never solved it.

Basically I've just extracted a 8.3gb file from my 320 drive to my windows drive. During this my PC came to a crawl. The mouse would pause, applications would just stick (no errors, just extreme lag).

It's really annoying and I have no idea if this is normal.

System:

Q6600 @ 3200mhz
2*2gb Corsair 6400
XFI
8800GTX
250gb
320gb*2
Windows Vista X64 SP1 (had the issue on XP as well)

It's certainly not normal for the mouse to pause etc, you will get some slowdown because the disks are thrashing and the CPU is doing the extraction but the system should run pretty much as normal. Have you noticed any other slowdowns?

Some cheap USB mice (and probably less cheap ones too) can lag horrifically when the CPU is under heavy load. If the application is multithreaded (think WinRAR is for instance) and all cores under 100% load, this is possible - not quite normal, but I've seen it.

I had this problem on a gigabyte m/b. It turned out to be the hard drives.
The cure was to move the sata leads to a different ports on the motherboard.
Having 8 sata's on the m/b, it did take some time before I found the right combo.

Does this mean we will start to see CPUs in mice?? :D

This has worked for me before too.

Right it still goes on. My mouse is a Logitech G9...

If I bought a SATA addin card would this solve it?

Hi,

Is this a video file? I've had issues with windows and the video preview function particularly with large files > 3-4GB ..... transferring DVD's to media centre.

I had lockups, explorer would 'have to close' and very slow access with high CPU usage.

I disabled the preview with: REGSVR32 /U SHMEDIA.DLL typed at the Run Programs prompt on the start menu.

To re-enable: REGSVR32 SHMEDIA.DLL
