Hey all,

Never done a BIOS update before and seems I need to attempt doing one for my Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H board, what do I need to think about and is there some app which I can save the present BIOS and reinstall it if things goes pear shape ?? Or should I just make a Back up and use restore point if things goes wrong ?? Or if it goes wrong would it mean my MB is bricked ??

As mentioned never done it so really need some guidance here. Reason for doing it my 1080Ti which gave me this fault a couple times each day ** Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered. ** and I gave them card back but it not happened for them, so they suggesting a BIOS update. So thought I ask here as to what one have to think about. :o

I doubt that needs a bios update. It's usually an overclocking issue with the card or system. Such as memory instability. Stock on everything and test.

That doesn't sound like a bios problem to me but updating the bios is easy enough. Just download the latest version (F10) from Gigabytes website (make sure you get the correct version of your board as there are three revisions, 1.0/1.1/1.2). Put it on a usb stick and reboot the pc. Enter the bios and go to the tools tab where you will find the Q-Flash tool. Fire it up and point it at the usb stick with the new bios on it and let it do it's thing. When complete it will reboot or prompt you to reboot and it's all done. Do not use any windows based software to flash the bios and do not interrupt power when the bios is being flashed.

If you are overclocked you will need to either save the profile before flashing or write down all of the settings as flashing the bios will reset it.

I have not overclocked anything, and the 1080Ti was doing the above on stock settings.

All I know is they been running the card for 96 hours, on 3 screens (since I am using 3 I am guessing) with 2 games and some YouTube streaming on the third and nothing like what I experienced. So I am basically just going after what they been telling me. Got an reply in an email so not got the card back yet, be picking it up tomorrow. So basically just gonna try and see if it works, just want the card to work, so willing to try (almost) anything ! Thank you for your description, I be following it tomorrow once I do it.

DDU (display driver uninstaller ) then reinstall lastest drivers - use safe mode method when asked

if your Bios is on F8 then won't bother flashing - though if you havnt overclocked at all F6 should be fine , if thats the version thats currently installed (though dont think this will solve GPU issue)

Have not overclocked at all. My present BIOS version is F5, date 2014-04-25 according to msinfo32. So you suggestion I wouldn't go with version F10 then ?? And yes, i doubt it as well, but as I said above, willing to try (almost) anything to see if it works or not.

@pastymuncher Should I leave it in the zip folder or unpack it ?? (Yes, that's how bad I am at this. :o )

since your that low, might as well go to F10 since there are benefits to other parts of the system etc etc

after doing this and still not working, with all default values, not sure if @GIGA-Man is able to point something out that has been missed

Gotcha, and thanks !

And well, it is a ASUS GeForce GTX 1080Ti Turbo, so it just might be that the Gigabyte board and the ASUS card has some difficulties to work together. :p

poor chip must be roasting to death! last Turbo cards didn't even bother to cool the vram

just curious , whats your PSU?

PSU is SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 850W (80 Plus Gold). And at the time it wsa the only card that shops here had available. But part from the error on occasions it been ok.

Unzip it before putting it on the usb stick.

Thank you ! :)

solid unit, was just thinking of methods that could cause driver/gpy to fail .

last chance shot if DDU didn't work with clean install of nvidia drivers would be fresh install of windows ... then that would rule software out

Have you got it in the right PCI Express slot? Not all of them are full 16 lanes.
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-Z97X-UD5H-rev-10#sp
See the specification tab

Expansion Slots
1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16 (PCIEX16)
* For optimum performance, if only one PCI Express graphics card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16 slot.
1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x8 (PCIEX8)
* The PCIEX8 slot shares bandwidth with the PCIEX16 slot. When the PCIEX8 slot is populated, the PCIEX16 slot will operate at up to x8 mode.
1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x4 (PCIEX4)
* The PCIEX4 slot shares bandwidth with the PCIEX8 and PCIEX16 slots. When the PCIEX4 slot is populated, the PCIEX16 slot will operate at up to x8 mode and the PCIEX8 will operate at up to x4 mode.
* When installing a x8 or above card in the PCIEX4 slot, make sure to set PCIE Slot Configuration in BIOS Setup to x4. (Refer to Chapter 2, "BIOS Setup," "Peripherals," for more information.)
(The PCIEX16, PCIEX8 and PCIEX4 slots conform to PCI Express 3.0 standard.)
2 x PCI Express x1 slots
(The PCI Express x1 slots conform to PCI Express 2.0 standard.)
2 x PCI slots

See the picture in the manual to see which slot is which. Basically one lane is actually 16 lanes, and if you use the other 2 it steals lanes

Well, now. First of, appreciate all the replies, thank you all ! :D

Secondly, went down to pick the card up and the chap told me what he done. So I asked if he checked the DP ports as well, since I called in about those the day after (forgot to mention it when in store :o ), and turns out he hadn't. Told him what the problem was and then he was like.

*Hmm ok, well up to you. You can take the card with you home and try the BIOS, or get a voucher to buy another card on a later date, or change it for another card now.*

So I asked what card they had around (none in shop unfortunately, but they have more stores, so had elsewhere) and I picked the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Aorus Xtreme Edition instead. Which probably make @GIGA-Man happy. :p Joking aside, that was the card I wanted from the start but it was all sold out when I was looking for one. So, heres hoping all will go well when it arrives, probably sometime end of next week.

So, even if I jumped the gun a bit, I now know how to upgrade BIOS and if needed do that later, but for now I keep it as it is.

@orbitalwalsh Yeah, was hoping not have to go through all that. It did occur to me though, hopefully the new card will be ok though. Once Ryzen 2 is out I be deciding what set up I be upgrading too so would prefer not having to do a new OS install if possible. :o

@mrbazmondo Yup, was in the top slot which is the PCIEX16 slot according to the manual.

dont forget to register the 4 year warranty ! online process, forgot to do mine 6 months in, aorus still registered it haha

Guessing you've seen the X470 Aorus 7 board then ?

@orbitalwalsh Nope, had not seen that one. Looks nice but hefty pricetag if the guy is right about his guess. :p And yes, I normally forget about those warranties as well, since I tend to wait a while to make sure things working ok before doing it. So thanks for the headsup ! :D

Once the CPU is out I probably ask you guys here for a build suggestion, OcUK's Guru's never faulted me before. :D

Hello TheSwede,

Sorry for staying quiet on this one, it's been a busy week for me and I missed your posts. Lucky the guys on OCUK forums are all amazing and helped as always. In regards to the BIOS update, like they said make sure it is unzipped on to the USB key. Enter the GIGABYET BIOS hit the correct F key for Q-Flash. Make sure you have the USB key inserted before you boot into the BIOS, if you don't Q-Flash wont recognise it..

It will ask you step by step to update the BIOS, if you get an issues just let us know, especially with your new 180TI Xtreme edition card..... even I want one of those... :-)

If you really want to update the BIOS there is a special utility in the Gigabyte tools to do it. It's launched from Windows in the Gigabyte Aps, called @BIOS ~ it runs in windows. It will give you the appropriate options for the board. There were three versions of that board and you need to know which one you have. It says which on the board itself. Open the case and look at the extreme bottom left, next to one of the screws that holds it in place. @BIOS comes up with a list of BIOS' for your PC and you just select the appropriate one. The utility then downloads it and automatically flashes the BIOS.

Ok, slight update to this. Got the new GPU a couple days ago, Friday to be exact. Ran it overnight between Friday and Saturday, for a total of 11,5 hours, and no issues. Then have been running it since 20:00 Saturday evening until now (probably be having the PC on until Tuesday morning) and still all good. I have not changed anything, didn't even do the BIOS update as I was asking about in this thread. :o So, as for now, it looks like it was the ASUS card that was faulty, even if the shop didn't find anything wrong with it when they ran it.

Just wondering (and yes, I know it is the MB part of forum and not GPU, but you guys are all awesome on what you doing so thought I can just ask here instead of making a new thread. :p ), should I run something like Unigine Heaven overnight to stress the GPU a bit or just leave it on as normal ?? Considering those **Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding.....** happened even as I was just browsing, it more or less like just having the PC on without anything stressful going on.
