I need to upgrade an aging PC
specs are
athlon64 single core cpu (skt AM2)
some very basic MSI MB with onboard graphics
2x1GB generic DDR2 RAM
cheap case and PSU
320GB HDD

the PC is used for basic office work and web browsing. it currently runs windows 7, but it does it with difficulties (high cpu usages spikes all the time).

my budget is as low as possible for a CPU and most likely a new MB.

for budget think about the £100 mark

Better chipset supports DDR2 and DDR3, HD3000 DX10 onboard graphics, rev. 2 PCIe slot for upgrade to graphics later. Athlon II dual should be plenty for your tasks.

AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 250 3.00GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £43.99

Alternatively you could check the processor support for your motherboard and get just a new processor and a 2Gb module of DDR2 to give you 3-4Gb depending on slots available.

For general usage I reckon a triple core is worth it. You would notice a difference over a dual core.

Anything more than triple I dont think you would notice in general office / web tasks.
