guys i need help finding a new cpu for my mobo. since my 64 x2 5000+ keeps on overheating i thought ill gamble to buy a new cpu to see will that solve the problem.

anyways my mobo is m2n sli deluxe i dont know the model number but definately not the m2n32 sli deluxe!! even better if my xigmatek dark knight is compatible.

i hear my motherboard now supports some AM3 but im not too sure so can someone confirm that? cos everywhere i look it says AM2 only not even AM2+

im looking for a CPU thats inexpensive and good for gaming. i was looking at the athlon II X2 250.
Or maybe someone know a tri-core quadcore thats cheap also supported by my mobo (i do not like tweaking).

budget: max-£80 / preferably £40-£60

Thanks for replying. I'm really low on budget. I have to leave some money for a new mobo cos that's my 2nd suspect of overheating. God I hate costly problems xD.

Thanks for the list! damn the 250 isn't supported. I might go for the 240e. Seems like a more efficient version of my 5000+ unless any1 know a better value 1 that's not overbudget.

1more question :P do I need to update my BIOS? last time I updated it and my BIOS chip died:( im not very good at handling with complex software. xP

It's not very often your motherboard is causing a CPU/GPU to overheat.

If I were you I'd get the Athlon II triple core and unlock extra core if your motherboard supports it. Also using an AM3 cpu on your motherboard won't allow to use the ethernet port. (See http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM2/M2NSLI_Deluxe/#CPUS)

You will need to update your BIOS.

Have you tried cleaning out the CPU heatsink and reseating it? Which heatsink is it? Might be a cheaper option to buy a new cooler. You can then also continure to use the cooler as the mounts for your board is the same as an AM3/AM3+ board.

Unless you're really really certain that the cooler is not full of fluff, that the heat compound under it has not degraded, and that the fan is spinning at proper speed, I think the 2 posters above have the right idea. (And even if it looks right, have you removed it and checked there's not something silly like a small bit of grit stuck between the cooler and the CPU, and that you can see a good flat imprint in the paste?)

I've yet to hear of overheating being the fault of the motherboard or CPU. You'd be more likely to have been suffering overheats since the first day you got the PC, rather than suddenly have it start happening now.

i cant find the info that am3 will disable my ethernet port? so if i buy 240e (am3) my ethernet won't work? its on the supported list and doesn't specify any info on ethernet.

its not my cooler i tried out 2 coolers already and they both dust free. xigmatek s1283v

Another option is to try undervolt the CPU as well to keep it cool.

As stated on the CPU support list:
beta, please note this version has removed LAN option ROM

LAN = Local Area Network, which basically means the ethernet port, which is required for the PC to connect to LAN.

What temps is the CPU reaching by the way?

Dam I'm stuck with am2 unless I change my board then.

Resented it like 10times and the temp were generally 80-120c idle only once I got it to 60c

Wow that is really bad!

Have you also checked the airflow of the case? Think you can save £100 more for a better upgrade?

plenty of airflow with my antec900 case i seriously think its the cpu though because ive been having tempts problem since day1 (pc second hand) normally people only need to resit their cpu once and itll last for couple of yrs but i resit once every 3-6 months but i was able to get it down to 36C-50C those times.

anyways im might buy a new mobo if my board does not fully support am3. unless there is a cheap good am2 CPU.

Well from another look at the CPU list your board can support the first Phenom series. See if you can try to find a second hand quad core that nicely fits your budget.

thanks dude ill check out the 555. btw what is so special about black edition?

Ive finally found the problem. its the motherboard! now my temps are reading 20-30C on idle a new low!!! xD i am so happy right now i can cry xD.

anyways i might RMA the CPU and get a better 1 when i gt my next pay.

The clock multiplier is fully unlocked (can be changed up or down), the ordinary multipliers on AMD can only be changed down. It just gives you an extra variable if you over-clock.

This particular CPU is actually a Phenom II X4 955 with two cores disabled. Some people have been able to re-activate them, although the 955 isn't on your CPU support list so is probably a no go for you.
