Need to upgrade GPU, old one dying.

Hi all,

I hope you all had a lovely bank holiday weekend.

I am looking to get a new GPU and want to make sure it's compatible with my existing kit. My current GPU is on its way out; It makes a god-awful, high-pitched whirring sound. Somewhat flexible with budget, around £500 would be a nice sweet spot.

I mainly play 7 Days to Die, and also record whilst streaming from the same system. If you need any more info, let me know and I'll add to this post.

Thanks in advance for your help :)

I'd be on the look out for an MSRP AMD 9070 unless you're reliant on Nvidia for your steaming software, worth noting that that AMD also has less driver overhead so the 9070 should pair better with your CPU. Conversely, the latest Nvidia drivers are a bit of a shambles right now, including the launch (aka most up to date) driver for the 5060ti. Your 2080ti really picked its moment to kick the bucket, it's a dodgy time to buy a GPU, especially coming from what you have at that sort of budget.

The alternatives in that price range for Nv would be either the 5070 or 5060ti 16gb, but you're not really getting much performance uplift (if any, it's probably worse in some scenarios) with the latter of the two over a 2080ti.

I would see if the old GPU can be salvaged however, if the whirring sound is a fan dying it's a fairly easy fix and would save you a pretty penny. I'd personally give the thing a good clean and repaste while ensuring there the fans aren't acting up, and replace if necessary.

New, 9070 or 5070 are your best options, anything slower is going to be very underwhelming for £500+.

9070 XT or 5070 Ti are a better uplift (and +4GB VRAM on the 5070 Ti versus the 5070, which will be gold later down the line), if you can afford the extra.

I'd agree 100% with all of this. The driver situation especially is quite unprecedented in terms of how bad it's been, because we've seen the heat and spontaneous combustion issues before.

AMD is the most compelling option it's been for years, while I sit here with a 950 quid card that hasn't had a stable drivers since December. Absolute ******* Nvidia.

9070xt is absolutely the one to recommend this time around, I don't read anything like as much about AMD cards or drivers having problems as I do for Nvidia nowadays.

Sound advice yet again from Tetras, he and Gray have given you all the advice you need OP.

Both Gray and Tetras have nailed it in terms of the options you have. The only thing I can add to that is that if you decide to check out what Gray suggested in terms of seeing if the fans are shot, if they are you always have the option of removing them and strapping a couple of 120mm fans onto the shroud. Ghetto yeah, but often even quieter than the card originally was due to the 120mm fans moving more air more quietly.

That's an option if it's the fan controller that's knackered. If it isn't and is indeed the fans themselves, you can still use the ghetto mod above, you just buy an adapter to go from the card's fan controller and control both 120mm fans as you did with the original fans. Adapter brand is Gelid if I recall.

Sometimes just lubricating the fans can be all that is needed,
The 2080ti has a reputation for having memory problems so it might not be a bad idea to sell your gpu while it is still working and got value to put towards a different card with warranty,

I would definitely try giving it a good clean and re-paste first, if you're in any way comfortable taking it apart. It sounds like either a failed fan, or dried up paste (leading to massively higher temperatures).

If you want a new card at around £500, a 5070 would be good. That or a 9070, but prices for those are inflated at the moment.
If you can push the budget a bit (and especially if you want the same 5+ year lifespan from it), a 9070XT or 5070ti would be worth the extra in my opinion (12GB VRAM on the 5070 is a bit of a turn off!)

I haven't played 7dtd in a while, but when I did, my 3060ti was fine, except for when things got busy (horde night!), which seemed more CPU... or server... limited.
You may find that some of the above cards are a bit CPU limited too with a 9700K, so worth keeping that in mind unless you want to consider a whole platform upgrade - is your CPU overclocked?

Thanks everyone for the input.

I'll look into trying to replace the fans and repaste once I have some time off work, I feel pretty okay with opening up and taking apart if needs be, do clean my machine regularly though.

Once done, I'll see how that goes and update here.

Have been contemplating the idea of going whole new system for about a year now. So this might be the push, but we'll see lol

Thanks again everyone
