Need to verify age to watch some Youtube videos

Since when did you have to send them your credit card details or send images of a passport, driving licence etc. etc. to Youtube in order to watch a video?

The change was a result of an EU directive.

Not the companies fault.

Fair enough but we're not in the EU, so why does that affect us?

Both the same account. It's also an account, I may add, that is actually older than the age they're trying to verify.
