Hey,

As some may remember, i RMA'd my mobo back to OCUK last week (a gigabyte 965p-dq6). Well, 2 days ago a B stock mobo arrived, revision 2.0 and not 1.0 like my old one! Joy! A working PC at last, right? Err no, computers aren't that damn simple.

I assembled my PC, did the best cable management i could, plugged everything in, pressed the power button, and everything seemed to run great! For 10 seconds anyway...

It just seems to turn it self off, then back on again, repeatedly. I get no screen at all on my PC, the monitor won't even come off standby. I have tried unplugging unnecesary things, like HDD's, using one stick of ram, reseating the cpu and waterblock, clearing CMOS, using another generic stick of ram, all to no avail.

I did, however, manage to spot this. On my old board, the +12 8 pin atx header on the motherboard had a small cap over 4 of the holes (making it a 4 pin header). This worked great. On this b-grade mobo, however, there is the same header but with no small cap, i dont know if the previous owner lost it or whatever, but if the PSU cable is plugged into it, then the above happens (resetting constantly).

If i unplug this little cable, i can get the computer to stay on for as long as i want, but still with no screen. The HDD's are idling, but the HDD light is constantly on.

I really am stuck here, I need all of you veterans to pull together and help me bust a cap in this PC's a55, yeah!

have you got another PSU to try ?

or can you take the PC to mate and get him to "jump start" it for you ?

it could be a power issue. As a matter of interest, do you get bios beep error codes or does the system beep to say it posted ?

if not i suspect its the power thing on your board you mention/ PSU

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I only have a generic 350w, would that be enough?

Where the PC would normally "beep", it restarts. If i unplug the 4 pin 12v, it doesnt beep at all, but remains running.

The only time i have got it to beep is if there are no ram sticks in it. It does lots of fast, short beeps, meaning power issue  I dont know why it doesnt do this with the ram in though

I know it's a pain, but take the CPU out again. Double check the pads underneath and clean if needed. Take a close look at the tiny pins in the motherboard socket. Reassemble if all looks ok.

I have done that, no luck :(

What a PITA, do you guys think my CPU has died? Would that cause the PC to not even post?

Right now i am debating whether it is a dead cpu, faulty mobo or lack of 8 pin cpu 12v connector (currently using a 4 pin which worked on my other board)

It could be that missing blank. Does'nt the 4 pin blank sort of switch off those 4 pins when you only use a 4 pin plug. Maybe it's looking for a 8 pin plug and on not finding it shuts down.

Hmm if so you could be on to something there, but if it does "switch off" the other 4 pins, how does it do it? AFAIK its just piece of plastic right?

I really hope this is the problem!

Let me get this straight, you RMA'd your mobo, and they sent you another mobo that had already been returned to em by someone else instead of a brand new one, and you aint sent it back yet.

The 8 pin connector will accept either a 4 or 8 pin connector from the PSU, makes no difference. It provides power to the CPU that is why it won't boot with out it.

I'd suspect the board followed by the CPU.

No, it boots with and without it. Its just that it will repeatedly shutdown if it connected, but will not restart if i dont connect it, confusing i know.

I know but a properly designed motherboard will NOT boot and POST without it. Hence my guess that either the board or CPU are faulty.

Yep, they sent me a B-grade mobo, i know its been used because the box was smashed and there was thermal paste around the cpu socket.

So i guess OcUK have sent me the wrong item, I should have received a nwe one, am i in the right to demand a new motherboard? Kinda cheesed off that i will have had to pay postage to return this twice (approx £10 each time to send back!)

I'd tell 'em to behave theirselves & demand a new working MoBo.

Bloody chiseling swine...........

And i just spent over £3000 with 'em..........

I just tried another CPU, nothing worked. Its the mobo then. Not happy, going to ring now for an RMA number.
