I am putting together a PC for my father-in-law (Not Pre-built) and all he needs it for is to surf the net and general office work. He does not want to pay a lot. Is this spec ok:

400w PC Midi Tower case

AM2NF6G-VSTAMotherboard

AMD AM2 3200 CPU

512MB Memory

80 Maxtor Gb 7200 rpm, Hard Drive

Black Pioneer 16x DVD±RW x12 Ram Dual Layer DVD-Writer

1.44Mb Sony Black Floppy Disk Drive

PS2 Keyboard,

PS2 Mouse

WL-138g V2 54G Wireless PCI Adaptor (These any good? Will work with all wireless laptops?)

17" Hyundai IT N71S Silver/BlackTFT, 1280x1024, 8 ms, 500 : 1, 280 cd/m2, Speakers,VESA

Thanks for looking. Need to order today. Ta

Is this pre-built from a company? If not be careful of what Ram you are using as there are no AM2 motherboards that support DDR as far as I am aware unless ASRock have recently started making one.

Maxtors don't have the best reputation at the moment, you may well be lucky but there does seem to be an above average instance of failure with them.

Finally I don't know about the wireless card, in theory all should connect with everything I believe, dropping to lower speeds if necessary but my luck with wireless connections is pretty bad so I wouldn't take it as gospel. :)

Building PC myself. The memory is Corsair DDR2 PC5300. Is that ok?

Wireless card is an Asus one. Should be ok?

Thanks

Ram should be fine then.

You don't have a graphics card down, I'm sure you've already checked the motherboard has onboard but if not worth just making sure as not all do now.

I might normally be concerned about a generic PSU but it is hardly a demanding system so that should be ok also.

Afraid I really can't help with the wireless though, maybe take a quick look in the Networking sub-forum as they may have more information on that specific model.
