Ive recently moved house and my new postcode cant get cable (its 100 yards away ffs)
im now on tiscali 8meg broadband, connecting at about 5meg and using the adsl modem they supplied along with a 10m cable
im moving my pc upstairs and want to set up a wireless network as my telephone socket is downstairs
what exactly do i need to do this?
im presuming a wireless router will replace my adsl modem and also that i will need a pci card or usb wireless 'thing' of sorts
lol i need some help please
not to expensive and with the ability to add a further pc at least to the network is ideal (my nearly four year old daughter wants her on pc - shes obsessed with cbeebies website)

any help greatly appreciated

You need a wireless router with a built in modem (wireless routers can come without modems, for cable users).

Then just add USB or PCI wifi cards to the PCs you want to connect to.

thanks dave
any recommendations?
and can i leave it downstairs next to my telephone phone point?
its just that from reading up on the subject i get the impression a lot of routers are for sharing connections from the actual pc that is online

im usually pretty clued up, been building my own pcs for about ten years now but wireless networking is something i know nothing about and reading up on it it sounds VERY complicated lol

As far as I know, once you have the router+modem setup you don't need to have it connected to a PC at all and can just tuck it out the way. Thats certainly how my GF has hers setup back home. I won't recommend any specific models, as I don't know enough about them (networking isn't really my strong point, especially ADSL stuff).

Thanks for the replies
Ive bought a Netgear DG834G router an a zyxel 802.11g pci wireless card
managed to get them setup eventually tonight and am well chuffed
have also bought a 802.11b usb wifi adapter for my daughters fourth birthday so she can go on cbeebies on her own pc

i just thought id mention tho that while trying to get the equipment setup i was repeatedly disconnected from a 'btvoyager-8d' connection before realising it wasnt mines !!!
its signal strength was always low and i couldnt seem to stay on long but it let me use its connection to browse, i guess the moral here is always use some sort of password at the very least
hmm, im tempted to do away with my connection now ...
