The NEC MultiSync EA241WM 24" Monitor (link removed, sorry)

I'm definitely not the best gal for knowing the best deals and specs when it comes to hardware, but I used this monitor on my work placement last year and it seemed pretty good...

My fantastic mum has offered to buy me a monitor for Christmas and she said she would be happy to buy this one, but I really don't want her to be out of pocket if there are better models out there for that sort of money or less.

I would be using it for coding (hence the ability to tilt the screen vertically), as well as gaming, browsing and movies. It would be used as a primary monitor and I'd use my Samsung Pebble 22" as my second monitor (for now at least).

I saw the other thread on recommendations for monitors and there were suggestions for the Dell UltraSharp U2312HM 23", LG IPS235V-BN - 23", but I'm really not sure what is recommended for my particular needs and what I can currently get for that price.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Firstly I'd remove the link as linking to competitors of OcUK isn't allowed.

Just replace it with the make and model of the monitor.

I did a quick Google search and it seems that monitor goes for about 290-300 GBP, correct? For that money you can probably find better value, at least for your needs, which don't include photo editing it seems.
Not sure what to suggest though, there is such a wide variety...

It was about £245... I was looking for something that would last and give a good quality image without burning my eyes/the screen out as I will be looking at it for a long time throughout the day. Preferably it will have an adjustable orientation, but that's not a must. Looking for something between 22"-24" widescreen. I don't really know how to define the specs further, or what else I would possibly need for the purposes I'd use it for though.

You probably can't go wrong with the Dell UltraSharp U2412M. A little bit pricier than 245 (not that much if you shop around), if that's too much get the 23" version, see http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-055-DE&groupid=17&catid=1425&subcat=

Don't take my word for it as I have never seen these monitors myself but I've been on this forum long enough now to have seen plenty of recommendations for them.

If this thread here becomes dead I suggest you bump it, but also go through other monitor threads as there is a wealth of information on here.

To protect your eyes check out a programme called F.lux. I spend a ridiculous amount of time in front of a monitor for work and it helped me a lot to reduce any eye strain. Plenty of threads on this forum too, the search function works quite well.

FlyingPig you're ace :D Thanks for the suggestions, I've been browsing the other threads here and seen you've replied in quite a few, you seem to know your stuff!

I'm currently looking at the Iiyama X2377 HDS, LG IPS235V, LG IPS236V and the Dell UltraSharp U2412M.

Ha, to be honest I don't have much of a clue! I was in a similar position as yourself a few months ago but luckily there is a great community here to help people on the way. Guess I'm just trying to help out a bit too now.

Good luck with whatever you decide on, and make sure to post back with your impressions.
