So I have a wired lan setup at home.

Is there a mains plug available that will allow me to plug in my mains lan and get wifi signal out?
If so what is it called.

I have a router with only wired lan connectors.

I need to make it so that I can use wifi for my phone and laptop.

I need a device I can plug the lan cable into and the device out then give me a wifi signal to which I connect my phone and laptop to.

How did you manage that? Wires only routers obviously exist (use one myself), but you usually have to have a good reason and go looking.

Three main options:
  • Replace the current router with a router that does have wireless.
  • Buy a dedicated wireless access point (if you have the budget and a suitable mouting location an UniFi AP-AC-Lite is a good bet).
  • Buy a wireless router and disable to functionality you don't need to make it a wireless access point.
You haven't given any indication of:
  • Budget.
  • Type of wireless required (2.4GHz, 5GHz, etc.).
  • Speed required.
  • Size of area to be covered.
Unfortunately there isn't a one size fits all option.

I bought this router when wireless security was poor so decided on getting a wired one at the time.
It was quite a while ago.

Speed is not so much of an issue but obviously the quicker the better.
I would ideally like one that does both 2.4 and 5GHz.
Size of area is about the 2 average size living rooms so not much.
Budget around £50

An access point is probably my preference based on your previous post.

£50 doesn't get you much if you want decent 5GHz wireless.

From the information supplied I would have thought that a modern all-in-one solution would be a better that adding an AP to an ageing wires only router. Depending on your ISP you may be able to get something suitable for almost nothing.

BTW when you say 'this router' it isn't very helpful, we can't see it. Your ISP and the connection type/speed would also be worth knowing. It all helps to building a proper picture of the situation and coming up with a sensible solution.

That is old. Decent enough in its time but not worth hanging onto unless you've got a really good reason.

I'd suggest that you phone BT and chat them up for one of their current routers. Chances are they'll supply one even if it means you signing up for an additional 12 months.

Cool i'm going to do that.
Contract is up in two months time anyway so might aswell. Hopefully they'll give me a new router.
