I just opened the task manager on my nephew's Windows 8.1 x64 and I noticed something running called "PRIVOXY"

I have never heard of it before so I clicked "End Task". I then tried to go back online using Google Chrome and got the following message "Unable to connect to proxy"

So when PRIVOXY is not running there is no Internet at all which is very worrying. I then decided to go into the control panel "Add remove Programs" but PRIVOXY is not there.

So I have looked online and discovered that although PRIVOXY itself seems to be a legitimate program some viruses do make use of it if they infect your machine.

So I do not know how it got on the machine but I need to get rid of it ASAP so any ideas would help.

Have you checked under Control Panel>Internet Options>Connections>LAN settings and unticked the proxy server box?

Have you asked your nephew about it? It could be he wants it installed on his computer.

I run it on my server to strip adverts out of web pages in my iPad.
