It's my nephews Birthday today and like a bad Uncle I've left it too late for his usual Lego fix to be delivered and my car's in the garage.

How much money do you think is about right? £10, £20, £30? Don't want to come across as a scrooge at the family meal when he's opening everything.

£10 for cash, £20 if your putting it towards a bigger gift.

Or £20 if you want to be the awesome uncle.

Is he your only niece/nephew? My Mum's side is just me, my sister and my cousin so we usually got around £30-£40. It was generally in a gift form though at that age, for me it was usually a game or something. Obviously it depends on your personal situation though.

I have 4 nephew's 2 of which are too small for cash. I remember when I was 11 I'd sometimes get £20 and that was 22 years ago, that's why I'm asking.

Giving an 11 year old money is silly. Open him a bank account and start saving on his behalf, he'll thank you when he's 17 and trying to pay car insurance.

in with the obligatory tree fiddy sounds about fair....

honest answer though is 10 quid is fine for an 11 year old imo, irrespective of whether you are a multi millionaire or not. you don't want him seeing you as the golden goose.

but if you are feeling like the big man chuck him a 20 - but I'd be sticking with the £10

I give £50 to each of my 5 niece's and nephew for birthdays and christmas. This goes into their bank account to be used towards driving lessons etc when they hit 17.

As stated by others give what you can afford dont worry about looking flash in the eyes of other relatives.

As above, give what you can afford.

We have three God-children and we give them £10 each until they are 18 (they have moved away so barely see them).

Immediate family then £15-20 is about right. I used to receive mainly cash by the time I was 11 years old for birthdays/Christmas and quite honestly I much preferred it as I could go out and buy bigger items.

£20 will buy a lot of awesome things for that age. Kinda depends on how well paid you are. :) are you still doing watch stuff?

ive neices & nephews around that age and tbh they still dont understand the value of money, id refrain from giving them cash, but if you have to then give him a tenner and tell him you'l be wanting to know what he spends it on

We are very close so I'll give him £20. He's a really good kid. Yes still doing watches, have 7 people working for me now, very busy :)

Does it? I'm doing well but wouldn't that come across as flash? Not to the boy I know :)

If you're doing well speak to the parents say you want to get the nephew a great present or perhaps put a big share towards a group present and see what they think mention that you don't want to appear flash.

How do you expect them to learn if they never have any?
