A few years ago I built a machine:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H Intel H55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 microATX

RAM: Corsair XMS3 (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz

CPU: Intel Core i3 540 3.06GHz (Clarkdale) (Socket LGA1156)

CPU Cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 CPU Cooler

Case: Antec Sonata II Piano Black

Soundcard: Creative X-Fi Soundcard

PSU: 550 Watt modular PSU w 12v rails.

I believe the motherboard is broken now and I had to sell my graphics card to pay rent a couple of years ago. It was a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6850.

I was hoping to buy a new motherboard and graphics card and maybe RAM if needs be - My strategy here is is to spend as little as possible to revive the machine and save up for better parts down the line.

Is it possible to still get such a micro-ATX motherboard with that socket?

The reason I want to do this is to get back in to games. I'm playing Rome: Total War/ Company of Heroes on my 2011 MacBook Pro and want to get Rome II and Company of Heroes 2 but my laptop isn't beefy enough to play them.

Perhaps I should just wait longer and get a mobo/cpu/ram combo w case/gfx card all in one.

A quick search on fleabay revealed these are for sale there for less than £50 new. Get the mobo and buy a gtx970 second hand too, awesome power considering how cheap they are now. Will destroy he games you're proposing.
