it looks as though the DVD/Blu-Ray playback are with purchase of a pluggin. Shame, but I guess it pays the licensing fees.

Nero has produced nothing but bloat this last few years. Went from great software to a total mess. May I suggest Ashampoo burning studio. So much better.
