last night when i was trying to build my (1st) pc, i had a horrendous problem with the noctua NH-U14S.

i had the cpu in place put the noctua backing plate on, fixed down the mounting arms, applied the thermal paste and then when trying to screw the cooler onto the mounting arms one side screwed on but the other side just wouldnt take. as the screws on the cooler are spring loaded they needed some pressure however, i was having to apply a fair amount of pressure to try and get it to screw in. finally i got it to screw in but thinking back the amount of pressure i had to apply is making me think i may have caused some damage.

has anyone ever experienced this or is this normal and will the cpu be ok? i am finishing the build tonight so thats when the moment of truth will be.

wish i'd never started it now and either bought one ready made or paid someone to do it for me.

You shouldn't screw one side in fully first. Its suppose to have pressure on it to spread the paste and make good contact.

You're supposed to screw each side in a bit at a time, but ultimately they do end up having a relatively large amount of pressure on them.

I reckon you'll be fine.

Only one way to find out - get it booted up.

Patience is a virtue! If it doesn't seem right most often it won't be. Doesn't hurt to try again. Bonus with taking it off and doing again, you'll find out if your application of TIM is good.

patience - is something i sadly lack in spades :(

i hope everything is ok, but not going to stress and think about it all day whats the worst that can happen i have to buy another one.

I had the same problem with mine. Took it off and the spread was good so tried again. Only turning one side enough so that it caught on.
You do need a fair amount of pressure and another hand would be handy, I struggled with clearance to tighten the screws as I don't have delicate girly hands.

Getting nice cool temps with it though and its very quiet (I think the exhaust fan makes more noise but then at the moment its on the desk next to me rather than under it)
