hi,

Just wondered if anyone has the nest protect smoke alarm ?

Thinking of getting one as seen them on offer at £80 each. Would need 3 in total so not exactly cheap, but would eventually go well with the nest central heating I plan to get later the year.

We have two, bought back in April. They look good and features like the nightly promise and nightlight are nice. We haven't had them long enough to have experienced the low battery warning but that should be less annoying than regular alarms.

Only had one false positive soon after we got them, I put that down to decorating dust as we'd just moved in. I did read a few complaints online of people getting more, these were faulty units and were replaced immediately by Nest.

The only other slight issue I have had is an occasional orange nightly promise as one or the other has dropped off the wifi. That could well be down to our fairly naff virgin media router and it usually fixes itself after a little while or a router reboot for some other issue. They still work with no wifi but you lose the smart features.

They did also disable the wave to silence feature, however I'm 6'2" so not an issue when I got the smoke warning when I burnt some toast the other day.

RE: thermostat integration, in the event of a fire or CO leak they switch the boiler off which is a nice feature, I think they also contribute to the thermostat knowing if anyone is in or not.

Happy with the purchase.

I've got one as well. It's a really nice bit of kit and as uchuff mentioned they integrate really well with the Nest Thermostat to help it see if you are home or not (to turn on the thermostats Away function to save you energy and money) and will automatically shut off the boiler if they detect a CO leak which is a great safety feature.
I'm still hoping they can some how fix the Nest Wave feature that silences the smoke alarm in the event of a false alarm by waving at it. This was withdrawn due to complications leading to some users inadvertently switching their Protects off.

The Nightly Promise and Pathlight are also nice features.

You mind telling us where you saw it for £80, as I could be in the market for a second one shortly?

When you install them make sure you clean them out with air before using them otherwise you'll end up awake at 4am flying down the stairs to locate the "fire detected downstairs".

thread revive...

has anyone tried buying a nest protect (battery version) from the States? much cheaper there and as a battery option, you shouldn't have the 110/220v issue.

Just wondering if the units are fundamentally different though or if there's anything else that would render them incompatible here in the UK?

Oh and btw, Jewsons is doing the £10 off thing again for May so they're currently £80 each

Not sure why they would be incompatible. Cheap to pick them up on the bay though.

Are the features really worth spending £80 on a smoke alarm?!

"last 10 days of activity" is surely going to show nothing unless you've had a fire, which you'll know about...

"choose a family meeting point" Errr...outside as fast as you can?

"A clear voice when things go wrong, avoid running into the fire on the way out"

All just seems a bit unnecessary?

You can get them cheaper than that. If you're getting a carbon monoxide sensor then it's even less when you take that into account too.

I got it as I was spending a lot of time at my girlfriends'. If anything happened to the house I would have no idea. This way I can text my neighbour and ask if they can quickly check.

Also doesn't go off anywhere near as much as the standard ones over burnt food and works along side Nest's Thermostat to detect when you're in the house.

I'm planning on getting it because I want to combine smoke and CO sensor in one. I'm planning on having just one detector for the entire house, it's a central'ish location and between both floors so I think that should work but out of curiosity how many do you have?
