Nest Thermostat to replace existing

Hi all,
So I hope some of you might have already done this. I have been taking a serious look at the nest thermostats to replace my horstmann channel plus h37xl thermostat, which has got 2 'satellite' thermostats wired to it for controlling upstairs and downstairs zones for heat (located in the dining room downstairs and the main bedroom upstairs), and it also controls hot water only on an oil fired condenser boiler, which sits outside.

From reading about nest, I understand that I will need 2 heatlinks and 2 nest thermostats to replace each zone thermostat, but what happens the existing horstmann unit? Does it stay in place or does something else replace it? Does it just be set to always on and the nest thermostats do their job?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi,

I would imagine it would not be needed.

The nest thermostats work in isolation to each other to set the temperaure in the zone they are.

To control them remotely you can use your phone through the app or any browser.

How long before Google get bored with nest thermostats and closes it down? Like what they did with Revolv home automation hub http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/04/06/nests_bricking_of_revolv_a_wakeup_call/. I would want something does not need someones else server for it to work.
Should that really be that much of a concern? These are all disposable items these days, if in a few years Google pull support then surely it's just a case of swapping it out for whatever the latest 150 pound gizmo is.

The kind of people who install nest are the those that are normally replacing their phones/computers every year or so.

Btw I'll put my hand up to being part of that crowd, I installed Nest the weekend just gone. :p

Google taking a relaxed view of its 'don't be evil' motto again.

If I buy a thermostat, either dumb or part of the IoT, then I damn well expect it to last the lifetime of the heating system.

Sorry GSXR, I don't see these things as anyway disposable because they are non trivial to physically install. All an iPhone requires is registration and pick a wallpaper.

If Google can't be bothered to host a cloud service for more than a few years, then outsource it to someone who will and make a nominal charge for it. In fact Google should have fully funded this solution anyway.

Even a recent failed kickstarter managed to cobble together enough funds to keep its cloud service running for the lifetime of the product.

I would agree there can be some effort replacing an old thermostat/controller system with a smart device but once done swapping it out for a replacement is trivial, should take no longer than 20-30 mins max.

That's a choice though,
Google has effectively taken my iPhone, bricked it with a dead IOS and handed it back to me.
Capitalism Yo... \o/

Pointing out they now have an iGoogle phone which is better does not compensate me for bricking my working iPhone.
