Net connection drops repeatedly (virgin)

My internet is dropping out regularly for 30 seconds at a time. This occurs with varying frequency throughout the day. At it's worst I will lose connection consistently every 10 minutes, but at certain times of day (e.g. at night) it seems perfectly fine. I'm on virgin media with a wired router (netgear). I have tried without the router and everything is fine, but I am not convinced that it is a router issue because I had similar disconnecting issues with my my previous router too. I replaced it with this one and things were completely fine for a few months, but then the problems started again (I had not changed any settings). This makes me think it's a problem with virgin, but IME if I call them and say it works fine without a router, they won't help.

What to do?

if it's fine without the router, then it's the router.

try a hard rest / firmware upgrade on the router

if it still fails, then get a WRT54GL and flash it with Tomato firmware, then do a full nvram clear, and set it up.

Tried this, no success.

I'm not wireless atm so don't really wanna splash out on wireless cards for the whole house. Can u recommend a good wired one?

Netgear are OK routers, quite cheap too might I add. Just spend a couple of quid on a DG834G, I had one for years and my family have used one at their place for quite a while with no problems too. Also it's the router that VM give out as standard so it's a product that they'll support if you did have to call up their call centre... although I wouldn't advise you do that :p

the WRT54GL has a 4 port switch built into it to.

it's super stable, which is it's main advantage

mine hasn't crashed since I've had it -over 18 months
