Net curtains...Why?

Is it just me, or do net curtains just look absolutely awful? We bought our first home a few months ago, but the road, and indeed a lot of the estate area, that we live on, seems to be 'net-curtain central'. I guess I can understand the elderly folks who have them, but it's not just them, as I have seen plenty of younger families around with them too. One of the first things to do for us when decorating was get rid of them and put some decent wooden blinds in.

Between those, and vertical blinds**, net curtains shade it for being truly awful, has anyone here PURPOSELY put net curtains up in their house?! I have seen a few houses with verticals all round as well, very office-esque!

**Unfortunately I do have a set of vertical blinds, but in my defence, they are for a sliding patio door, so I didn't have much choice of what to use! :D

Looked at those day and night blinds for our little conservatory / extension thing! But they were too expensive for us , looked good though so if you can handle the cost they look very nice!

I haven't really looked at the price just yet. They will be for our three bedrooms where the windows arn't particularly large so I'm hoping the cost isn't too extortionate.

We will have proper curtains over to block out all the light completely at night anyway.

Did you see them in person? How do they work exactly? The way I'm imagining it is like two fine nets with plastic (?) strips stuck on. You can then either line up the strips so you can see through half of it, or stagger the strips so that you can't see through at all?

Yeah I saw them in the shop, it's almost like when you fold them, the 'bars' fold on top of each other, hard to explain but if you image a striped blind, black and white, with the white being what you can see through/let light through, when you turn the cord, the black moves in front of the white kinda thing and it turns all black.

Rubbish explanation I know, but hopefully gets the idea across :D
