Hi peeps,

My managers have been sending emails quite frequently regarding monitoring internet usage and not do so etc etc

Soooo, I noticed they havent installed any additional programs on our pcs etc but keep saying we can track everyone so dont take the biscuit...

Is there a way they can tell how many times I am going on line, sites I am visiting etc etc without having installed any additional programs on my machine? And other then checking my internet history etc etc

Please advise

thanks in advance

cheers

They don't need anything whatsoever installed on your PC to monitor your internet habits. It will work a couple of ways,

1) Your internet browser will go through a Proxy server which will log your access, this can be something like ISA server or a third party product such as Messagelabs.
2) The gateway your computer is set up to use will log and monitor all connections....

It is much easier to manage if there isn't anything installed locally...

Oh and some programs can be installed, but don't actually show up in the logical places..

Ive got the microsoft network monitor v3.0 util installed on my pc, I look after three offices in the uk and its handy to see if any one machine is bashing the network, I dont use it for internet useage though it can be used for that very reason.

your best bet is to take a laptop in and pick up wireless, your admins will always have something in place that you can't get around

ahh so this email we all recieved is probably due to the firm clocking on to us using the net excessively during working hours?

having worked as an admin, and being forced to snoop and 'snitch' :( , i strongly advise you to adhere to what your company is saying

if you have a suggestion box, ask them if you can have an internet room for your lunch break, this is what they did in my old job

-us IT lot just had our own line put in :p

Or if you are the IT Manager as I am, just circumnavigate the monitoring software ;)
