Just thought I would pop in and say that I have just Wubi-installed UNR on my NC10, and am blown away by it's simplicity and ease of use :) So far it seems wonderfully designed for the netbook environment, I had MSN up in no time, the wireless works flawlessly, and firefox is fine. The only very slight downside is that the power management doesn't seem quite as good as XP, but that is outweighed by the 'niceness' of the rest. I am seriously considering completely wiping XP and going with UNR full-on

Anyone have any tips, or essential apps to grab from the repository? Or experiences to share, especially with the NC10 in particular with Linux/UNR/alternatives?
 
While I can't assist with any suggestions, I am rather glad you've made this thread :).
I was umming and arring about installing the Netbook Remix onto my NC10, but I think you've given me the push needed to go ahead and try it.
 
I used it on my Eee PC 1001HA for a while, but the battery life suffered too much, and I don't know if you can set up the power saving program and features you have in XP. The interface is nice, and it works well, quickly.

I didn't have to pick up many more programs than were already installed, perhaps skype and openoffice. There is certainly a program for almost everything though.

Shame, as in the end I was losing 1.5-2 hours of my 7hrs battery life, so it had to go as XP is just as good productivity-wise and I know how to troubleshoot it. Multi-touch gestures only worked properly in XP too. If Asus wrote a program to make the power saving features work in linux, I'd probably switch back.
 
Battery life has taken a bit of a hit on the NC10, still enough for an evening sitting on the sofa chatting on MSN whilst watching TV though so I can live with that potentially.

Anyone know if any of the 'dongles' for 3g connectivity that you can get from the phone providers work under UNR, or indeer any other Ubuntu flavour?

I'd take a look on the ubuntuforums.org for that info.

I've got 10.04 UNR on my NC10 and on the whole I like it. I do find elements of it frustrating though, like the inability of some third party programs to update the UNR menu system with a shortcut after installation.

I also managed to get the Canon MP560 wifi printer/scanner working properly with it too so that's a bonus.

If MINT were able to do a UNR style menu I'd prefer it over straight Ubuntu but UNR Is getting better and better and is perfect for small screens
 
Anyone tried eeebuntu? Looks a bit nicer than UNR to me and has power saving functions built in - there's a package you can get to change the CPU frequency etc, you could probably install on UNR no probs too.
 
I'm running it on my Aspire one.
Mind you, I hate the dumbed down netbook remix UI.
I log-in to a standard Gnome session, and I've ditched the bottom panel and consolidated the functions of that into the top panel.
 
I recently installed jolicloud on an aspire and I have to say it is a very nice little deb system :)

Do you know the name of the cpu freq controlling package? and is it in the standard repository?

My USB 3G dongle works fine since 9.04 its very simple to set up using the "Mobile Broadband" section of the network manager applet no command line needed. Mine is a Huwei modem on the "Three Ireland" network. I was very impressed as it just works
