Hey guys,

My mate wants to put xp onto his laptop; he's bought a brand new windows cd and a 4gb flash drive.

How should we go about getting the contents of the cd onto the flash drive - is it as simple as creating an .iso and just copying it over?

Cheers

No, you will have to create a bootable XP USB drive. Depending on the USB drive you're using and the netbook's hardware/BIOS it can be entirely hit or miss.

Be far easier to steal/borrow/buy an external CD/DVD drive.

Shame the Acer Aspire One piece of crap wouldn't boot from it. Tried 4 different USB drives too :(

Really is hit and miss with what combo of hardware works lol.

Didn't realise it was this hit and miss?! Maybe it would be easier to get an external...

It's an utter pain.

Take Liquid - he had success with the Acer One A150. I had an A110 and no dice.

Had a Sony one that didn't like any of my USB drives, but liked one belonging to a client. The fault isn't XP or even the USB drives, it's the crappy hardware/BIOS on these netbooks.

Got my Samsung N150 Pro to work using WinSetupFromUSB but it was a total PITA! On the other hand, installing ubuntu netbook edition was a piece of cake. For the cost of USB cd drives now it really ain't worth it and it's amazing how handy they can be!
