HI thinking of getting a laptop just to use downstairs (as pc upstairs)

mainly used for internet surfing, not much else really.

But I have some games about 4-5 years old and id like to perhaps play them now and then on it.

Would a netbook play them? and if they are on cd/dvd how do you put them onto the netbook as netbooks dont have cd/dvd drives do they?

Do you copy the cd/dvd content onto a thumb drive usb and then add it that way? slightly confused,

thanks

Look into VirtualCloneDrive or Daemontools and you'll find all the info you need.

It may play the games, it mainly depends on 3d acceleration. I stick to older games - Rollercoaster Tycoon, ScummVM emulated games etc

I would go with at least a Ion netbook (HP 311c), or a GMA4500HD CULV laptop (UL30A, T130, 3810TG, U350) for playing these.

The GMA4500HD is crap tbh, but I can play Guild Wars at low settings without trouble, so it should cope with old games. However, the netbooks graphics are on another level of bad.

The new kids on the block are the AMD Fusion chips. They bring decent HD power to the netbooks, and can do gaming on low settings. They haven't quite arrived yet.

The newest game I have running on my Mini 311 is Brian Lara Cricket 2007, I got it off Steam, saves all the virtual drive stuff.

Some old games had the CD requirement patched out, Quake 3 for example.

I had no joy getting Morrowind running without the CD, even the £1.99 budget copy had CD protection so I bought it off Steam in the end.

I'd just keep an eye on Steam for bargains, saves all the hassle.
