any ideas on which current netbooks do this ?

some of the reviews and specs dont make it too clear to me when they just list SSD and small sized drives etc

basically my laptop is on its way to laptop heaven but its 320gb HD and stick of 2gb ddr2 are willing to be transplanted

im just looking for a cheap netbook that i could use these parts in

cheers

No, aspire one SSD netbooks are different to hdd ones, not only does the base have a bulge to accommodate the hdd but the connectors are different to (ZIF vs sata).

Virtually all SSD netbooks won't be suitable as they will be PCIe or ZIF connectors and not enough room for a 2,5" drive (the cheap netbook SSD's are NOT 2.5"). Nearly all other hdd based ones will be fine bar the odd one that'll have a 1.8" drives but are few and far between.

so basically it should be ok if i go for one of the 80gb sort of ones ? ones with a proper hard drive

shame the really cheap ones wont work with it because the 'new' hdd is just going to go to waste :(

now to go look for a bargain

Yep, but do bare in mind that a few netbooks (this includes aspire one) don't have hatches to upgrade.

To put a new hdd in an aspire one requires you to take virtually the entire thing apart so you can remove the motherboard to get to the underside (ram on under side to). You may be confortable with this, some aren't.

Also bare in mind that you can only have 2gb max memory on these atom netbooks and some of them come with sticks soldered onto the board (like the aspire one) and a single upgrade slot... which would mean your 2 gb stick would not work at all.

The MSI Wind / Advent 4211 isn't too bad to upgrade as you just need to remove the whole base plate and then everything is accessible. It runs quite well with 2GB RAM and a 200GB 7200RPM HDD. Bloody glad I didn't buy one with an SSD though as I really thought the manufactuers would keep those versions as close to the HDD ones as posible to keep costs down.

I can confirm this too, got 2gb, a Samsung SSD 2.5" and Wirless N in mine. Can even run Football Manager 2009 :)
