Hi folks.

Mate of mine got a Netgear DG834G wireless router and USB wireless adapter a few days ago.

I went round and installed/set it up for him. Took about 20 mins all in, and was working perfectly at the time.

Got home and a few hours later, I get a call from him saying that although he can get online no problem with the desktop PC that the router is connected to, his daughters HP laptop cannot.

The laptop is showing that it is connected, the signal strength meter is showing "Excellent" and the little blue led light on the USB adaptor is on. However, when she clicks on IE, all that comes up is "Page cannot be displayed" for all websites.

I haven't been round to have a look at it yet, going tomorrow evening, anything I should check first?.

They are with Homecall Broadband if thats any help.

Cheers for any advice.

ip settings are correct? (DHCP on?), IE isn't set up to use a proxy? can it ping the router? the desktop? an ip on the internet?

Dunno. Will check tomorrow when I go round for a look see.

Strange thing is that it was working fine after I set it all up, then 2 hours later its not?.

I believe the settings are all fine, I just let the Netgear install wizard do its thing and everything appeared to be hunky-dorey at first.

Will check pings, anything else I should look at?.

just make sure that in tools, internet options, lan settings, that it is set to decet setting auto.

This happens on my daughter's laptop with a WGR614 wireless router.

I set it up and it all works. She uses it for a while. Leaves laptop to go into hibernation (sometimes for a day or more).

Open up laptop - excellent signal - no internet. Using a cable connection shows broadband OK.

Some times resolved by "repair" connection. Sometimes by "disable / enable" wifi on laptop. Once only resolved by resetting router to factory settings.

No idea why but seems to be caused by the laptop gonig into hibernation.

What application is setup to manage the wifi connection? Is it netgear's own application or the Windows XP Wireless Service? The Windows Wireless service was improved in SP2, making it easier to use. If it's set to use the netgear application, try switching to Windows XP service and see if that makes a difference, as I found the netgear application to be rubbish and very unstable in the past.

To switch to Windows Service go to My Network Places, go into the properties of the wireless connection, in there some where is a tick box to use windows to control wifi, then you just need to enter the network password and jobs done. Also consider switching to WPA far more secure than WEP.
