Netgear DG834N - Dropping wireless signal

Anyone else have this router and have trouble with it?

We recently got a much needed upgrade and now sport a rather nice ADSL2+ connection using a Netgear DG834N router. The router is upstairs on top of a desk and signal strength shows as either 4 or 5 bars in WZC.

Now, it's forever dropping the wireless signal on every other PC apart from my laptop.

My laptop (Advent 7082) will run for hours and hours and NEVER lose connection, no matter how much bandwidth I'm pulling. Everyone else's laptops (and my server, with a Belkin F5D7000 PCI adapter) keep dropping connection... my server being being the best for uptime.

I work for a bloody ISP, where part of my job is to guide customers through setting up and troubleshooting wireless networks and I can't seem to get my head around MY OWN network, ha!!

The router is set to channel 4 at the moment (tried every channel) and the Belkin adapter is set to match, but it'll still drop the connection as often as it likes. Some days it can be fine, others it can drop out every 30 seconds

Now, I wouldn't be concerned if it was only one machine that was iffy, but it's 4 seperate machines with 4 completely different wireless adapters... the fifth machine, being my laptop, NEVER drops connection.

I was tempted to get a Netgear RangeMax USB adapter and put that on my desk, but I shouldn't have to. Even the cheapo routers we send out at work are better than this rubbish.

I've tried new drivers, switching between the Belkin utility and WZC and even formatting the HD on the machine. Any other ideas? :(

i know it's been more than two years since the OP, but a dissection of my DG834N which suffered the same fate has revealed that the wireless is dropping out because the thing is overheating quite badly inside it's Apple-esque casing.

apparently modding the case with a fan or taking the sides off ought to solve the problem.
