Hi all

Was wondering, ive just bought a netgear duo nas, ive put 2 new 2yb samsungs in, its initialised and created the volume ok, now its syncing, it says 10 hours to go, theres nothing on the disks yet, is this right?
also i had a go at copying a 300mb file from a 2tb external usb hd plugged into the rear usb port to the main volume whilst its syncing and it says 4 minutes to copy...
Is that right? ive got nearly 2tb of data to copy across...
Is it because its syncing which could be slowing the process down?
Am i wasting my time with the duo if its the norm and its this slow?

Ive just ordered today the hp microserver with the rebate and does it have hardware raid 0 or 1? or is it purely software raid?
Would i be now wasting time with the duo building a volume to copy my data on to then find that cant move that volume over to the hp?

Any help would be cool.

Thanks, the manual doesnt say not to start using volume, it allows you basically to do everything your able to, but doesnt say if the speeds are affected nor whats good practice... Oh well ill wait for the sync to finish then test again..

And it was that thread you posted which made my wanna buy a microserver... if i didnt see it i would be £200 richer, the peps on the thread are saying about the good deal, it had to be done, im after home type network storage so i thought id try different options..

i guess ill wait till morning when the hp turns up and try out all the options and see, they best way to learn is trial and error.

Thanks.

After a bit of reading it looks like the NAS is syncing with windows(I maybe wrong)
Why don't you send both back and get a Synology plenty of posts here about them.

Or build a small server?

Research before purchase not after crazy impulse buys.

The netgear is synching it's raid array which will take along time with 2tb drives even with no data on them.

The Microserver is a much more flexible option, it will do hardware RAID 1 or 0 but the comtroller isn't anything special so you won't see much performance difference bettween that and software RAID. You won't be able to take the disks straight from the netgear box and then put them in the Microserver you will need to rebuild the raid and maybe loose any data on them. I built my Microserver up yesterday and so far i'm loving it.

Personally I'd say sit down stop playing with stuff and make an objective decision based on the merits of each box.
