Netgear Modem question : how to use as Router ?

I bought this Wireless modem :

Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem/Router/Switch/Firewall

I have it connected to my PC via the LAN port. As it's also a router can I connect a laptop to the Routers other LAN port and then access the hard drives on the PC from the Laptop ?

Hope this makes sense ?

Buy RJ45 LAN cable for every computer, connect to the router.
Share the directories, with user read/write rights.

Sweet.

By default is the setting that both the Laptop and PC allow sharing of all directories ? Or will I need to specify that ?

Also what's the difference between RJ45 and CAT5 cable ?

You'll need to allow directory sharing.
RJ45 is CAT 5. RJ45 is just the connector type.

If on XP, select the directory you wish to share and right click > properties. There should be a sharing tab that will allow it to be seen on the network. Make sure all computers are on the same workgroup (my computer > properties >computer name) and then simply go to Network Places and view workgroup computers.

just google filesharing on XP if you get stuck, its fairly simple to set up.

Could I do the same thing with my PS3?
Same router, but I have Vista x64.

no

PS3 doesnt support windows file sharing as its a sony device

you can stream media to it, but only in certain file formats and only via certain streaming methods. Look around at PS3 streaming if you want to know more.

you can however just hook the PS3 up with a patch lead to the router yes
