This is something that has just kind of niggled me for some time.

I have a pair of NETGEAR RN1004 Boxes.
They are both setup 100% exactly the same, 4x3TB drives as one single partition

One of them instantly has access to the array, however the other one seemingly pauses for a moment, and I am mnoistly assuming that this is because maybe on or more of the disks need to spin up to speed

Its never been a huge issue as its one of the NAS Drives and so its only used for ISO storage and once ots going, its just fine with the speed.

However, today, I had another play about with both of them, and there was a Firmware update and so sure I have donbe that, and I have also gonew through everything on them both and I realised that one is running 4xWDC WD30EFRX-68EUZN0 and the other is 4xToshiba HDWA130.

The Toshiba one is the one that lags

Its been like this since I set them up to be honest and thats kind of a few years ago, so its not like its an issue, I just wondered about it thats all.

Any thoughts on it?

I would guess your toshiba drives are low energy due to the fact they can stop spinning unlike the WD Reds. Are there any power down / saving options within the netgear boxes?

I found information here about it-

Looking down at the specs it was under advanced power management, which details what features it has.

Oh heck, sorry I missed the reply on this.

Ok, I will check the link shortly.

I have done a side by side comparison with the 2 NAS' and all the settings etc are all 100% the same. I upgraded the Firmware to the latest and so far, things seem ok.
To be fair, it has always been flawless, but its only that starting up that kind of irritates me.

And yes, there IS a power saving feature in the NAS software itself... I have set this to power down the drives if they have not been used for 10 minutes.
They are of an age now, and so they may be considering to be replaced soon enough, and so when I do replace them, rather than 4x3TB I will just go with a single 10TB and put that into the Server along with the others. Same with the WDs in the other NAS.

The Server is running a pair of 1000w PSUs and I have added a sweet SataCard and Adapter that gives me a full 5+8 Sata Drives. so its more than capable of taking more HDs. Annoyingly, the Motherboards own 2 built-in Sata Controlers ( 6 more Drives ) only lets me use 4GB Max Drives! - on a server??

These 8 Drives were once in the server, but it was silly really. Just for my own use.

Anyway, I will check the link, so many thanks for that!
