I used a gt since it's release, and it served well for 4 years, better than that little box be gave me at any rate. However it was unable to hold connection on a 3db profile, had drop-outs and synced at practically the same speed it did on 6db. There's also know issues with heat, dropping lan connections and issues with it's interpenetration of the snr, possibly something to do with the unbelievably buggy firmware netgear somehow manages to produce.
I've since installed the new (beta) firmware on the box and it not only hold the line stable on 3db but syncs ~2meg faster (13.5-14meg vs 11-11.5) than my gt so it's now set to bridged, with a wrt54gl running tomato attached, and no lag. While the bebox lacks the resources to be a functional router, it's perfectly sable as a dedicated modem.
Not only is the 54gl a better router than the gt, but tomato firmware is infinity superior to the gt offerings which incidentally, haven't been actively developed for quite some time e.g. DGteams, a lot less features too. Qos is usually why people use tomato, but the various versions plus the ability to script almost any task means you can make it do virtually anything you need. You can actually make it do dual wan (a.k.a. line bonding) if you want, and that's not a bad feature for a £40 router
I used a gt for 4 years. I wish I'd used a gl for the past 4 years
