Somehow... the AC adapter for my Netgear router has gone missing and I am now in need of a new one. Anyway I know that the output rating for it is supposed to be 12V 1A, but I have sourced another adapter which is rated at 20V 2A. I've attempted to test it and it seems to power the router fine but is it ok to use as a perminant replacement or is it not and needs to be strictly 12V 1A and it could blow the router up if I use the incorrect rated adapter? I know adapters which are rated lower do not work properly or do not work at all as I tested another one which was only rated at 9A and it kept turning the router on/off/on again.

Thanks all - Liam

20 volts:eek: on a 12volt router.STOP using right now unless you want to fry it
Fleaybay sell these cheap
using that psu on a 12v router is asking for trouble or possibly a fire

LOL, as above, I'm surprised that even worked without instantly killing it, but you'll need to stop using it ASAP as you'll overheat and kill the regulator.

It's vital that the voltage isn't too high and 20V instead of 12V is way too high. However, it's also important that the ampage isn't too low and more than required won't do any harm. I power my Netgear router and switch, which need 12V 1A each, from one 12V 4A supply.

LOL oh dear indeed - I must have been lucky.

Anyway when I got home it appeared that the original adapter had been found in the end so all is well. I kept the router powered using that other adapter for a good 2 days without a problem. Thanks a lot for the info guys I will make sure that I will stictly use the correct rated adapters from now on.
