Spent a few hours round a mate trying to solve this problem. They have a Netgear WGR614 connected to the Telewest/Virgin cable modem.
The wireless laptop can connect to the netgear, and the traffic succesfully goes trough to the ISP and has internet connection.
Plugging the cat 5 from the Netgear to the Dell desktop produces no link whatsoever. Not even an activity light on the NIC ? ( No OSI layer 1 or 2 activity )
(It will accept a direct Cat5 connection from the Telewest modem to the desktop though and connect fine.)
However, unplug it from the desktop when it has no lnik from the Netgear and then plug it into the laptop ethernet port, and hey presto, a link light and connection ???
I have put the latest firmware on the Netgear and I am stumped. The fact there is no link between the Dell and Netgear confuses me as I have exhausted all possibilites.
Its as if we have a serious layer 1 conflict ?
