Ok guys, here it is.

I have been on NTL 4Mb service for almost a year now, but since the latest internet explorer update I have noticed a drop in performance.

Not that noticable at first but I ues my Netgear WGT624 V1 to wireless connect a second Pc for my son, lately web browsing on that PC has become rather slow and I have noticed loss in some of my online gaming nights on the main PC (see sig) so I started to investigate.

I did a quick speed check and this is what I got.

With the router in the loop

Download 1833Kbps Upload 306Kbps

I then connected the Cable modem directly to my onboard Ethernet port:

Without Router:

Download 3420 Kbps Upload 382Kbps.

So quite a difference, but where is it all going ?

It has been working fine for almost a year and why change ? Has the latest IE version reconfigured something ?

I have spent over an hour on the phone to NTL to make sure they were sending the right speed, they (and my recent tests) seem to point the finger at my router..........but what to do now ?
I had a friend install it and he turned off the option for others to hijack my bandwidth so that really isn't the cause.
Any help appreciated.

Hmm... not so sure but worth a shot. Have you tried resetting the router to factory settings and seeing if that cures the problem? :)

It could just be sheer coincidence but I have a Telewest/Ntl 4 meg line as well. I have had the same issue, its just happened over the last couple of days.

I installed Vista on Saturday, but Im sure the issue did not start till Sunday as I had to download all he relevant graphic drivers and so on and this was no problem.

When I connect to my WAP device through the PC I get speeds that are remenicent of Dial up when I connect directly to the modem I get the full 4 meg.

When I check the connection speed between the computer and the WAP it says that It is getting the full 11mbs at all times.

Has my WAP device had it or is there some evil cable conspiracy

I think I will have to reset to factory settings in any case as I have misplaced my password and username :o

I might be wrong but it seems to of coincided with the IE update, things seemed to be a little slower from day one???

If the PC can connect at full speed directly to the modem and can't when the router is in place it'd point to the router being the issue. Have you flashed the latest firmware and does the problem persist following the router being reset or is it a more gradualy evident problem ?

In my case the problem becomes more gradual. When I first boot the machine up I get roughly 2/3 of the full speed I should which gradually fades away to roughly Dial up speeds.

captain jack it could be a driver issue in your case, vista drivers are still very much in the infant stages compared to proven XP drivers with several years of consumer testing. It could also be a whole load of other things... Any chance you can have a look at your modem logs (see 192.168.100.1 ) ?

Ive checked the Modem and its fine and dandy, I think it could be the WAP has had it, i have had the thing running solid now for almost 4 years. I suppose its time to send it on its merry way to that place where all good pieces of scrap hardware go > EBAY (only joking) :p

Guys,
It would appear after further testing, that my router is playing games.

I have not upgraded the firmware (forgot my user name and password) and if I rest to factory settings it will take a few hours to reset it all, after which I may be no better off, so I am thinking of replacing the router with something newer.

but with what ? is my next question?

I have a Netgear 108Mps adapter card in the remote machine and would like to "future proof" if possible, my router for a few years to come.

Any suggestions ?

I was thinking along the lines of this:

but I am not sure..anyone got some tips, advice ?

Cheers
Ade

I would say not to get a draft N router at the moment as it may not be upgradable to final N specs so you would be better off getting a cheap G router and when N stuff is nearer spend then as if you get now you have a 50/50 chance of it not being upgradeable

Ahh, yes, its still draft.....excellent well spotted :D

I think I might try a Linksys WRT54GS-UK I have heard lots of good things about Linksys, seem to be reasonable price too
