so I went and bought a shiney new router with USB adaptor.

from OCUK:
Netgear DG834N 270Mbps ADSL2+ Modem/Router & WN121T Wireless Networking Bundle.
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-130-NG&groupid=46&catid=116&subcat=143

got it into my lovely new (old) house. to save me running cables everywhere I thought this would be a good solution.

now. I setup the router using a temp cable.
but when I use the wireless adaptor I get a problem.

I connect the adaptor.
I scan for a network. it finds the network.
I click connect.
it asks for my password.
i enter said WPA+xxyz+zaabbcc encryprtion passkey (or whatever the security type is, silly names honsetly!!!)
it tries to connect.
then the network I could see dissapears. and it doesnt connect.

I tried using the windows xp built in wireless. didnt like it.
I tried using purely netgear software. didnt like it.

I tried disabling the onboard network port, so no interferrence. didnt work.

not sure what the problem is really. all works fine with a cable attached.

anyone got any ideas?

that would be a good idea :)

will try it in 2 hours when I get home.

in all honesty I might have tried that. but will post back with results soon.

edit:

ultimately, why would the encryption be getting in the way?

hmm. I didnt do that.

I thought it automatically recognised the fact.

I will also look into that. and will post my findings (hopefully via brain cooking Ntype transmissions! :) )

so far it isnt working.

I added the mac address of my wireless adaptor to the router "wireless station access list"
the mac address is stuck on a little label on the back of the wireless receiver.
that all worked fine.

I can connect to the router with the wireless adaptor now. full signal strength. great! and full security (hopefully)

however I cant seem to connect to the net at all no matter what I do in windows. i am connected to the router, but nothing seems to get in or out to the internet.

I will continue playing this afternoon and see what happens.

other than that thanks for your help so far guys!

chaparral,

with a cable, I can connect to the internet fine (and it is quite fast as well)

just with wireless it wont do anything.
think it is a windows setup problem.

I be installing my USB adaptor that came with this bundle sometime this evening (if i have time) and i let you know if i get any problems with mine...

that would be great. thanks.

I have the afternoon off. probably home around 3pm. I will start playing around again.

didnt have much time over the weekend, but I managed to not be able to see the network at all to connect to. so still have a cable trailing all over the house.

tonight I will do a full reboot of everything and see how I get on :)

the mac address on the wireless USB adaptor is on the label on the back of the unit.

i have got tonight off, so I am going to have a play around.

going to turn everything off, and start again with only the wireless connected to start with. see what happens :)

With the router have you updated the firmware to the latest version as the original shipped firmware when this router came out was flaky to say the least.

i have done this.

I also found new drivers for the USB adaptor...but none of the later versions seem to load at all. they just fall over as soon as you double click the exe.

i tried all sorts last night.

i think it is my pc that is causing an issue.

when i plug in the wireless adaptor (usb) it just starts flashing the ble light. never stops :) literally forever.

i tried uninstalling the driver, installing the new one.

windows just cannot see the network any more.

i tried booting in safe mode to uninstall the drivers, etcetc.

nothing seems to work.
it is about time I did a rebuild anyway so will probably give the machine a good cleanout before I start getting into it again.

what a nightmare.

mine is now on wireless connection 15 or something :)

i find now that when I plug it in the blue light just flashes. doesnt matter what port it is in. it just doesnt stop flashing.

it cannot find the network.

also, when you go to properties it doesnt give me any wireless settings tab anymore (which makes me think windows doesnt like it)

I have tried old drivers, uninstalled and new drivers, back to old drivers.

this thing is rubbish.

will have another go after I have done a re-install (need it anyway, but didnt think I wireless adaptor would drive me to it!!!!!)

Don't worry about re-installing...

My adapter chooses to work when it wants to...

Just restart your pc a few times and it'll start working...

Takes up to 10 minutes to start working and about 5 re-boots of the pc but then it's fine...

So annoying..

My adapter says

"limited or no connectivity"

"drivers not installed"

"device has malfunctioned and is not recognized"

I love this adapter... it's so great :) Not... I'm going to get a hammer in a minute..

so what is your solution?

i just want to turn on my PC and connect to my wireless modem router...to save me running cables all over the house :)
