Hi Folks, Happy New Years :)

I have a quick question which i hope some one with a bit of router knowledge, or maybe even common sense could help me out with :).

Here goes....

I upgraded to Virgin 50mb broadband when it was first available (which is ace btw, download speeds of 5.99/6.0 mb/s wooop) and when i upgraded up i got a free Netgear Wireless N Router. The router can support upto 300mbps.

My question is: if i keep my pc wired (ethernet cable from router to pc, instead of modem to pc) will my pcs internet connection then become limited to only 300mbps or will that 300mbps be for the wireless connections only?

I think that makes sense.

Your internet connection is rated at 50 Mbps
Your wireless connection is rated up to 300 Mbps

Given the above you can see that your wireless bandwidth saturates your internet connection therefore given a decent strength wireless signal, your internet connection will not even be limited over wireless. In reality the wireless connection will only operate at about 150 Mbps but this still saturates your internet connection. You will only see a noticable restriction when you come across a low signal / poor connection.
This is why Virgin dish out N rated routers for 50 Mbps connections as using a standard G connection would be restrictive.

Moving onto your actual question....

A hard wired connection will not restrict your internet bandwidth to anything associated with the wireless function of your router.

Speed restrictions arising from different wired / wireless connections really come into play when considering throughput around the devices in your home network / LAN.

For example, if that router you have has Gigabit (1000 Mbps) rated ports and you connect your PC to one of the ports and a NAS drive to another, the file transfer speed between the two will be pretty good. Transferring the same file from a laptop connected by wireless to the same NAS drive (still hard wired) will be much slower as the connection is capped to the wireless speeds of the laptop.
