I have two Netgear routers lying around, One WGR614v6 and one WGR614v9.

There is a dead spot in my house which I reckon the wireless repeating function will help, The v9 has this function but the v6 does not, Can the v6 act as the main router, Put the v9 into wireless repeating mode and it will just work or do they have to be the same model and put one into base station mode?

Hopefully this make sense.

No reason why they need to be the same model or brand or anything unless netgear have purposefully put that requirement in their firmware

If you can load dd-wrt on to either then that will do what you want

I don't think it will work, because you'll need to tell the router that it's the base station.

A better solution is to wire them together and setup the second unit as a wireless access point.

I can't wire them together, there isn't anywhere to put the wire at the moment.

In the options it says one should be in base station mode, just wondering if it works without rather than setting it up and figuring out it doesn't work.

Both router and repeater need to support the wireless bridging/repeating mode. The v6 doesn't, so it's a non-starter unless you cable them together.
