Hi everyone!

I'm pulling my hair out about this at the moment so I'm reall hoping someone can help me here..

I've got the Netgear WNDR3700 (I know it's actually a cable router but I use it with a separate modem and has always be a great match) and it's always been a good router if I'm honest I never thought it lived up to expectations and the reviews it got but milage always varies and that nots the point anyway..

Recently, well actually the past few weeks really - the router seems to have been on a downward spiral - it started at first with the connection being very slow or all the computers not being able to connect (oh god the amounts I've seen that recently) but I could normally remedy any issues by switching everything off and then turning it back on a while later.

But now as time has gone on it just seems to be worse - sometimes it connects, this is on a multitude of devices such as iPad 1, iPad 2, iPhone, windows 7 laptop etc - sometimes it doesn't connect and sometimes the network doesn't even appear - although now and again on the windows laptop it seems to run just fine - weird beyond belief.

But funny enough connected to the router via ethernet - it works fine, like a dream - so it seems like the wifi or more to the point - the anntenna is playing around!

Does anyone know of any issues with this router? Does anyone have one or have heard of similar issues? Is it most likely the router is done for now or can it be saved? Could something like firmware affect the performance of the wifi?

Sorry for the massive post but any help anyone can give would be beyond awesome!

You don’t mention trying the obvious first steps…

  1. Switching to a different wireless channel.
  2. Scanning for other wireless networks that could be interfering.

Sorry about that just so you know I you read this I have done the following already multiple times:

- reset router
- installed new firmware didn't make anything better or worse
- changed the channel, tried a few

In regards to other networks interfering this is the only one I have active and there arn't any local ones either - not close enough to interfere with anything as far as I can tell...

Also just want to clarify it was sudden event all of this - the setup had been working for a long time without any intervention...

o.0 What's so special about Mexico lol?

I have the same router, both bands are active and running fine so I am curious :p

Hi

Just wanted to bring this thread back to life the router is still just as bad - it seems like the range on the router has just gone to crap i guess it's time i admit the router has broke but can that happen? if the antenna had broke would it not just stop working altogether?

Thanks!

it increases the output power, naughty I know.

Doesn't seem to have made any difference here - still the same as when i opened this thread - anyone else heard about or come across anything like this before? is the router a write-off now?

Thanks

As far as i can tell yes as the 5Ghz doesn't stretch far anyway - in the room with the router everything is fine but downstairs (where it used to work very well) it now barely works and actually keeps dropping out all the time on a variety of devices including iPhone, iPad, windows 7 laptop etc - wired is still fine so the issue is with the wireless range for sure...

could be down to the wireless chip gone faulty,, still under warranty?

Try the router is a different location, not in the same area, maybe a friends house to rule out external sources.

I'm guessing the warranty is only good for a year which in that case im out of luck ;)

I'll see if I can move it around but might not be able to...

I've reset the router to factory settings again but actually used the disc that came with it so I'll report back as to how it goes...

Hi

Just a little update since the reset it seems to have gone worse if anything think I might just have to admit it is done for...

It does sound like it has had it's day. As it sounds on it's way out you could try a different firmware on it. Gargoyle uses the same underlying firmware so you could try that - it also has quite a neat feature where you can see all the devices connected and signal strength of each one. It's an open source firmware but by the sounds of it the Device is gone anyway - just prepare for it bricking the router if it goes wrong. That said I use gargoyle on a 3700 and love it never even tried the netgear firmware :)

Just had a WNDR3700 go bad on me too. It was running DD-WRT - so my guess is that it was a hardware fault. Every single Netgear router I have ever had, has only lasted about a year. Just switched to the Airport Express - as I heard they were reliable. Turns out they are! Will not look back.
