Hello All,

Im sure this one is quite simple but here is my problem:

With VM have a computer upstairs (surfing the net), want to use laptop downstairs to surf the net but want to be able to have access and print to the printer upstairs.

Also to add to my problem i want to get a Wii (downstairs) and get that connected to the net as well.

What i would like to know is how do i go about achieving all of this??

ok, so at the moment it just goes..

wall -> cable modem ->pc...

you want.. a wiresless router, get a WRT54GL, and install Tomato firmware on it (easy to do)

so..

wall -> cable modem > wrt54gl > pc & laptop

on the pc, set the computername to something easy, like 'desktop' (this is in control panel, system)
right click the printer, tick 'share this printer', choose a name, click ok etc..

on the laptop, start, run, type in..
\\desktop (or whatever name you chose)

double click the printer, and add it :)

-pc will need to be on to print

Ok with you so far - i already have a router in fact that very one!

Ok *** printer thing sounds very simple, but is there a way i can still print without having the PC switched on?

And also how do i go about connecting the Wii to all of this?

You'll need to set the printer up as Network one to do that. Plug it into a switchport on the back of the router. Give it a static IP (within the range your network uses) and install the printer on both the Laptop and PC as a network printer adding a Standard TCP/IP port, which was the IP you gave the printer. That way, only the printer (and router obviously) need be on in order to print from the laptop. There may even be a Wizard to work through installing as a network printer on the actual Driver Disk for the printer.

Sorry if that doesn't make much sense. Don't know about the Wii, do they support wireless?

thanks for that DA - how do i go about giving the printer a static IP address, would that be done through the router?

And about the Wii - not sure whether that supports wirless

If you plug the Printer into the Router, it will get given an address by DHCP. Then Print out a configuration page (Check the manual or web on how to do it for your particular printer) and type the IP address shown in your web browser. This will take you to the Printer Configuration. You should be able to change from DHCP to a Static IP through its WebGUI and tell it what IP to have. Also depending on the printer, it can be changed using the Controls and Display on the printer itself.

Also - have a look through here on connecting your Wii
