network boot

Sorry, im trying to set my laptop up (Acer Aspire 7735G) to Wake On Lan. Ive had a look in the BIOS and can only see an option to 'network boot'. I was just wondering if thats the same thing? If at all possible, Id like to be able to wake it up with my iphone.

No, Network boot is when the operating system is on a file server, and the PC actually boots from that in preference to its own hard disk.

It could be that your laptop simply doesnt support wake up on lan (WOL would cause the laptop to have a permanant drain on the battery for instance)

Hmm, I wonder if thats why my VAIO loves to go flat... (runs off to check).

PS. WOL is fun.. I love to surprise my GF by turning my PC on from the iPhone (just search for external media library, and it turns on my PC).

Even if WoL isn't mentioned in the BIOS, check the NIC properties->Power Management page within the OS. Although, you mentioned it is a laptop and WoL can only wake a sleeping device that is connected by wired not wifi.

Ahh thanks for that, it was my understanding that you could WOL via WIFI. If thats the case why are there a few Iphone apps available for such a purpose?
Thanks

You can send WoL from a wifi source, but the receiving device (i.e. what you want to wake up) must be wired. I often wake my wired desktop from my wifi laptop and phone.
