When I'm streaming Xvid/divx videos over my 54g wireless lan through to media center, every minute or so I get a stutter, where presumably, it has not been pulling the data across fast enough to keep up - is there any way I can set a buffer of some kind to try and avoid this? I'd be happy to wait 30 secs before a video starts whilst it pulled it into some kind of buffer before it played.

This used to work fine on the Xbox, as you could specify LAN buffer.

not sure if this answer the question (not got MS media centre), but if it's using Windows media player,

goto
Tools
Options
performance tab
(network buffering section)
select buffer and set to 30 seconds

I found 54mbps WLAN to be fine for XVID/DIVX but it struggled with MPEG2 playback. Do you have any overheads on your WLAN, such as security?
