i keep this brief, i run a simple 2 connected pcs with crossover cable

reason obviously so my other pc has inet connection

it all works nicely

now i brought in another pc and i JUST wanted to test it, (i dont want 3 pc's connected)

so i connected the new pc up which is almost identical to my other pc but has a linksys LNE100TX ethernet card, but it says network cable is unplugged, so i cant proceed with the network wizard!!

1) now i know the cable works because it works with the other pc so it cant be the cable !!

2) i have another linksys LNE100TX ethernet card which i tried, and no luck !

3) i tried different pci slots, still no luck !!

(all pcs run xp)

i just dont get it

anyone got any ideas? cuz iam all outta them :)

cheers people

trav.

are you using a patch or crossover cable?

If it's a patch i would guess the problem is that the network cards in machnes 2 (old)and 3 (new) don't have the ability to autosense that it's only a patch and correct for it.
It's probably working with machines 1 and 2 (assuming you are using the same cable for them) because machine 1 has a NIC that can auto correct for the cable type.
Try connecting machine 1 and 3.

cable unplugged can mean just that, but it can also mean the cable is damaged (you've already tested it), the wrong cable is being used, or the device at the other end isn't responding as expected (either due to the wrong cable being used, the device being faulty, or being turned off - my PC gives a cable unplugged if i turn off the router;)).

thanks for the reply matey

iam using a patch cable

now my setup is as follows

PC1 has the internet connection, and has an inbuilt nic on the mobo

PC2 also has a NIC built into the mobo, and it works fine when connected to PC1 via the patch cable

now i remove the cable from PC2 and plug it into PC3 and get the unplugged message in taskbar

PC3 is using the linksys Card, iam guessing the linksys card doesnt like the patch cable.

iam going to try and get another brand of network card and test it out

however when you said

"don't have the ability to autosense that it's only a patch and correct for it."

is there a way of fixing that? or is the only option to get a crossover cable
or get another ethernet card that does support patch

many thanks

thanks for the reply matey

i just realized theres no light on the back of the linksys card

even when i try another linksys card, still no light...

iam guessing thats a bad thing :)

You have a few options:

1). Buy a cheap switch
2). Buy a crossover cable
3). Buy a patch to crossover cable adapter
4). Buy a new network card

All options are dirt cheap and I'd be inclined to suggest the switch route as this will provide the option to add more PCs at a later date, something you don't need now but it could prove useful in the future.

hey Phemo,

funny you just said that

i went out brought back a cross over cable

tested it, still saying cable is unplugged :(

then i got another network card this time by realtek

still the same thing !

tried the patch cable again, still nothing

i also went into device manager, set both to full duplex still nothing, same with half duplex and they were originally both on auto sense, so i know that doesnt works anyway

hmm i got one option left which iam going to try out

the pc that has the internet connection, thats using an integrated ethernet card, iam thinking about using the linksys nic or realtek nic on that, then using the spare linksys card on the other pc

ill post here the results

fingers crossed :)

hey Phemo,

i tried the above, didnt work

oh well ill buy a hub switch, even tho i dont need one because iam never gonna run more than 2 pcs here

but if it corrects the problem, then so be it

if theres anything else that i might of left out, let us know, thanks for the help people, tis a strange one, but thats pcs for yas :)
