Occasionally, Windows will decide that for the duration of my session, my local area network connection has a cable unplugged and is thus inactive.

This is obviously lies - if it were true, I wouldnt be able to post this becuase as I type this apparently my network cable is unplugged.

Why does Windows XP do this?

Could it be possible you have 2 network ports on your motherboard and your settings are set to show disconnections on the 2nd port.
