Network connection issue

Hi, earlier on I installed several Windows updates (Windows 7) and an update for Comodo Internet Security. Up until that point, my internet was working fine and my network connection was fine, it used the 'Obtain IP address automatically/Obtain DNS server address automatically' option on the network adapater (which I am just using the on-board motherboard ethernet connection, the router is connected to this PC, it is a Super Hub and we are with Virgin Media).

I then restarted my computer and Comodo popped up saying 'New network detected' and the IP address was: 169.254.236.77

My computer would not connect to the network or connect to the internet. I have solved the issue by turning off the 'Obtain automatically' options and inputting the correct information (192.168.0.2 IP address / 192.168.0.1 Default gateway) and everything is now working again, but I am wondering why the network connection/internet connection suddenly stopped working after a restart due to software updates. I've updated both many times before and never had an issue so why has it suddenly become an issue now. Now, whenever I change back to the 'Obtain automatically' option for IP/DNS my connection can't connect to a network or the internet. Any ideas on what the issue is? Thanks.

A bit of a late response to this thread, as I have just been using the static IP connection and it all seems to be working fine, but I just tried what is suggested in the above post, disabling my firewall/Comodo Internet Security software and then re-enabling the 'automatic IP / automatic DNS' setting and it still will not connect to the network or internet.

I'm confused as to why a simple Windows and security software update (the Windows updates just being seven generic security updates for Windows, and the firewall seemingly having no effect on the connection, as explained above) and reset of my computer would cause this issue. Does anyone have any other ideas/suggestions as to what the issue could be? Thanks.
