Hi,

I have been given a Compaq Presario SR1000 from a family member that I wanted to use as a general use PC at my business, but before giving it to me, the original plan was to give it to someone interested in buying it.

So I used Darik's Boot and Nuke to wipe the hard drive of all data, then plans changed and that guy doesn't want it anymore.

So I've installed XP on it and plugged in an ethernet cable into the port on the motherboard, but on the network section of control panel and under network adapters in device manager, only the 1394 connection is showing up

Any ideas?

Hope you can help! :)

EDIT: The light on the ethernet port on the motherboard is flashing. Also just tried to download a driver from the HP site, got it (maybe for a slightly different model) but when I go to install it says that drivers are already located on the C drive (there is a folder here with LAN drivers) and to install them through device manager ... But if the device isn't under network adapters how do I install it?

Click Start then Run or Windows key and the R key and type this into the run command.

devmgmt.msc

Then hit enter or OK.

From here you will be in the device manager to install the network adapter as you were instructed.

You should see an exclamation sign next to the network adapter?

Just done that and it is the same as going to my computer, right clicking and going to device manager surely?

There is no exclamation mark next to the network adapter there, it only shows the 1394 net adapter there, nothing else

There is 6 things under 'other devices' that all have exclamation marks next to them. They are:

- Multimedia Audio Controller
- Multimedia Controller
- Other PCI Bridge Device
- PCI Simple Communications Controller
- SM Bus Controller

Any idea which one might be the right one? Also in this LAN folder with drivers, there is loads of different folders for different brands, I tried searching each folder, through device manager, to add a driver for the 'PCI simple communications controller' but it said it couldn't find anything suitable

Just going to go and check that it is enabled in the BIOS ...

I'm quite busy at the moment and don't really have time to sort this issue out, so I just got a network card out of an unused PC and put it into this one, works fine

Thanks for your help anyway. On-board LAN was enabled in the BIOS, but not showing up under network adapters ... Do you think that part of the motherboard could have been dead? Or is that not possible?

I hadn't installed any other drivers so maybe it needed chipset driver? Anyway, it is working now :D
