I'm using XP Pro and having network connectivity problems. At least a couple of times a day my network connection just dies - pages don't load, torrent programs stop downloading/uploading, msn etc all stop working. The only way i know how to get up and running again is by restarting the pc before it happens again in a few minutes or hours.

I've tried repairing the network connection, disabling then re-enabling it, setting a static ip and disabling DHCP on the router but no joy (not quite sure if i have been doing this correctly though). Other PCs on the network ie my linux pc and pc on wireless aren't affected. It's just the one PC that is having this issue.

I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling network components from add/remove programs and tried doing a system restore back to when i wasn't having this problem but also no joy.

I've never had this problem before. Any ideas people?

What is the ip address of the pc when the network connection fails? is it still the same? can you ping the router when the connection drops?

Wireless or wired?
Three words, very important question.

:) The connection in question is wired. One of the other two PCs is also wired and the third one is connected wirelessly.

What is the ip address of the pc when the network connection fails? is it still the same? can you ping the router when the connection drops?

I've not checked but will check when the connection dies again.

I doubt it's a DHCP issue if you've tested with static IPs and it still does it.
Check the eventlog on this PC to see if there's anything in there regarding hanging services or anything like that.

Ah, yes. Forgot to mention that i thought it was a DHCP error because when i looked in event log/system there were lots of DHCP error events. My net died during the night last night and just checked event log and the last error event i can find is a TCPIP error (4201).

I looked that up and it came up with a few possible problems that it could be. I've just installed the most recent NIC drivers that i could find as i was using the drivers that xp installed during the installation.

No dropped connections as yet. It appears the latest drivers for my Marvell Yukon network controllers have resolved the issue, thank goodness.

:)
