Hi there - when I click on Network I get the message that network discovery and file sharing are off. "Click here to turn on" - but I keep going round in a loop - If I go into advance settings I get the same thing - the profile won't change - no network access to our other PCs.

The only way I can get network access is to turn off Windows firewall for the local network - is this right?

Advice please
(2 XP, 1 Win 7 PCs)

Nope - still well clear of things like that! Windows firewall / AVG antivirus - but I don't think I changed anything - it used to show other PCs in "network" without any tweaking!

Thanks, Mel

It does sound horribly like a Norton/McAfee glitch, have you accidentally installed anything with a free tool bar recently?

Andi.

Not that I can detect - I always untick the boxes, e.g. with Java updates etc. And AVG (full scan) or the MS Update monthly check (separate download, full check) reveal nothing untoward.

Tried this and Mr Fixit can't seem to switch on "files and folders" or remote access. I.e he has the same problem as me! Something wrong somewhere.

Can't see what - also won't run Windows defender and won't install microsoft security essentails. Seems to have got itself in a twist somewhere.

All scan say no infection anywhere.

Tried "recovery" but says nothing wrong!

For mse to not work would say you have a trojan/rootkit or virus of some type. Try booting from a Linux live cd and running the trend Micro online virus scan.

Trying their online "Housecall" scan now - from within windows.

Couldn't see an option for Linux scan?

Looking at forums etc - it may be a problem with the Windows Firewall installation being corrupted.

Thanks.

Theres a particular service you need turned on inside windows, otherwise you can't turn these on.

Cant remember the name off the top of my head, but have a google. Will report back when i have a look.

Go to windows firewall advance setting and check that Network discovery is allowed.

This I think is the problem - there are NO "Outbound Rules" at all ("There are no items to show in this view"). The "Inbound Rules" are all related to non-microsoft programmes.

A web search suggests a re-install is required - big problem. Lots of software installed - don't want to go through all that again!
