Hi i need help to figure out whats going on

For the last week my network is playing up.

My (wired) PC will not connect to the internet. but will connect if i use Surfshark vpn.

My phone & my wife's phone won't connect through WIFI, it says connected without internet.

My smart tv is running Netflix fine.

If i restart the router, everything will work again, but can randomly stop working at any time.

I am guessing this is router related but is there anything else i am missing before i reset my BT router?.

Set a manual DNS on your device to see if that fixes, & if that works, check whatever DNS server your DHCP is handing out.

These posts are starting to wind me up and this is probably the last one of this type that I am going to reply to. You haven't put the barest minimum of information in your question to give anybody a hope of helping other than guessing at the answers
  • What is your internet connection? (FTTC, G.fast, FTTP)
  • Who is your ISP? (your post says BT router but they can be used with a few different providers)
  • What router do you use? (BT have used lots of different routers over the years)
  • Are there any other devices like powerline devices, switches, APs or even other routers that we should know about?
  • Did you change anything before this all stopped working?
Help us to help you

Sorry mate, i am clueless when it comes to networking lol.

Its BT FFTC, i pay my bill to BT. 65mb download speed.
Its a BT smart hub 2.
My sons pc is wired to the router by an ethernet lead, nothing else is connected physically, no powerline, switches, AP's or anything else.

Changed nothing, as i said i am clueless regarding networking.

Bit of a back story.

Couple of weeks ago, i started up my pc and no internet connection, tried looking around on the net and i finally settled on the ethernet port on my motherboard being bad (happed before to me years ago).
I did order a pci network card off the rainforest, but when i tried my pc again that evening, it was working so i canceled the rainforest order.

Since then, very intermittently the router just drops out, it does seem to be most common when i first start up the pc.
It happened again this morning, i restarted the router and so far it's been working fine all day.
And yet on Saturday, i had to restart the router at least 6 times as it just kept on dropping out.
But the strange thing is, i have Netflix running constantly on my tv (grandkids watching cartoons) and when my pc, my sons pc and all the mobiles had no WIFI, the tv did (tv connected by WIFI)

How is your PC connected? You said only your son's PC is wired to the router but then you're talking about an ethernet port on your PC.

If you leave your PC unplugged then does everything else start working?

Have you tried new ethernet cables?

How long are the current runs, are they directly wired to the router, or do they use wall ports etc

My Pc is connected by ethernet lead, its about 300mm away from the router.
Then my sons pc is also connected by an ethernet lead directly to the router, its about 10m long.

I haven't tried unlugging the pc yet or my sons, i will wait for the problem to happen again and try it
